Le urla squarciano il silenzio nella stanza dell’ospedale, lunghe, dure e piene di dolore.
Gulbar, diciannove anni ha gran parte del corpo bruciato, le mani, la faccia e tutto il tronco. Il marito la cosparsa di liquido infiammabile e poi le ha dato fuoco. “Oh Dio, ti prego di lasciarmi morire”, Gulbar, sussurra con un filo di voce mentre le infermiere cercano di medicarle le gravissime ustioni. Nel letto vicino è ricoverata Anargul, venticinque anni, è stata data in moglie a soli quattordici anni a un uomo molto più vecchio che la picchiata per anni con bastoni e catene, fino il giorno che presa dalla disperazione Anargul si è data fuoco per porre fino al suo calvario.
In Afghanistan circa 87% delle donne ha subito almeno una volta nella propria vita violenza domestica. Nel 2007 è stato aperto il Burning Center Hospital di Herat, unico centro ospedaliero in tutto l’Afghanistan con trentacinque posti letto per tutte quelle donne vittime da parte della famiglia, per matrimoni forzati o per abusi dagli stessi mariti. Nel 2016 il tribunale afghano ha registrato 3700 casi di violenza contro donne e giovani ragazze e la Commissione Indipendente per i Diritti Umani in Afghanistan ha riportato migliaia di casi nei primi sei mesi dell’anno, tra cui percosse, uccisioni e attacchi con acidi sul corpo.
